Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide base with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. Within cells, NMN sits on the biosynthetic route that recycles nicotinamide back into nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NAD+ participates in redox reactions and signaling, enzymes that produce and consume it influence many metabolic processes. The compound is therefore best described as an intermediate rather than a final signaling molecule.
In the canonical salvage pathway, nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase, known as NAMPT, transfers a phosphoribosyl group to nicotinamide and releases NMN. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then attaches an adenylyl group to NMN to form NAD+. Alternative routes exist, including a pathway that uses nicotinamide riboside and its phosphorylated forms. The relative contribution of extracellular NMN to intracellular NAD+ pools remains an area of active investigation, and the roles of specific transporters and enzymes are not completely defined.
Natural sources of NMN include mammals, plants, and microorganisms, where it functions as an intermediate in NAD+ salvage and biosynthesis pathways. In mammals, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase. Some foods contain measurable NMN, but reported amounts vary widely by species, tissue, and analytical method. The extent to which dietary NMN contributes to cellular NAD+ pools remains an open research question.
Chemically, NMN is described by the molecular formula C11H15N2O8P and a molecular mass near 334.22 g/mol. The beta anomer has a CAS Registry Number of 1094-61-7. It is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder for laboratory use. The molecule carries a phosphate group and a positively charged nicotinamide ring, giving it polar and water-soluble character. These properties influence how it is detected, purified, and stored in research and analytical laboratories.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. Its structure links nicotinamide to D-ribose 5-phosphate through a glycosidic bond, placing it in the pyridine nucleotide family. The compound exists in alpha and beta anomeric forms, and the beta form is the one used in NAD+ biosynthesis. NMN is not a protein or a hormone; it is a small water-soluble molecule that occurs in living cells as a metabolic intermediate.

Research interest in NMN increased after animal studies reported that oral or injected NMN can raise NAD+ levels in some tissues. How NMN is absorbed and distributed in humans is not fully established. Some evidence suggests extracellular NMN may be dephosphorylated to nicotinamide riboside before cellular uptake, while other studies propose specific transport routes. Direct human data on these mechanisms remain limited. Regulatory status also varies: in some countries NMN is treated as a dietary supplement, while elsewhere it is restricted or requires approval, and these differences affect labeling, sale, and research.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide group linked to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. NMN is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, a coenzyme involved in many metabolic reactions. The abbreviation usually refers to the beta anomer, though related forms can exist. In scientific literature, NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another NAD+ precursor.
In the NAD+ salvage pathway, the enzyme NAMPT converts nicotinamide and a phosphate-donor molecule into NMN. A second enzyme, NMNAT, then converts NMN into NAD+. Nicotinamide riboside can also enter this route after being converted to NMN by nicotinamide riboside kinases. Because NMN sits at a junction between precursor uptake and NAD+ formation, its cellular concentration is tightly linked to enzyme activity and tissue type. NAD+ participates in redox reactions, signaling, and DNA repair, and its levels decline with age in some animal models, though human evidence remains more limited and context-dependent.
The biologically relevant form of NMN is generally the beta anomer, which is recognized by NMN adenylyltransferases. NMN is polar and water soluble, and it does not readily diffuse across lipid membranes without assistance. Whether intact NMN enters cells through a specific transporter remains an open question; some studies propose solute carrier family members, while other work favors extracellular dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by uptake. This transport and compartmentalization debate affects how researchers interpret oral administration studies. The distinction between intracellular synthesis and extracellular delivery is central to current discussion.
Terminology around NMN can be confusing because several related compounds share the vitamin B3 family. Nicotinamide riboside is a nucleoside, whereas NMN is a nucleotide with a phosphate group, and NAD+ is a dinucleotide coenzyme rather than a simple precursor. Niacin and nicotinamide are also NAD+ precursors but follow different metabolic entry points. In commercial and scientific writing, NMN usually refers to beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide unless another form is specified. Consistent nomenclature helps distinguish chemical identity from proposed biological effects.
NMN occurs in many living systems, including bacteria, yeast, plants, and mammals. Dietary sources are present in foods such as edamame, avocado, broccoli, and various meats, but amounts vary widely and are generally lower than those used in research settings. Laboratory production often relies on enzymatic synthesis or chemical phosphorylation of nicotinamide riboside, and commercial material is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder. Because NMN is hygroscopic and sensitive to heat, moisture, and pH extremes, its handling requires care to preserve identity and purity. Aqueous preparation should be done with attention to pH and temperature to limit hydrolysis.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in cells. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring linked to ribose phosphate, and the compound serves as an intermediate in the salvage pathway for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. In this pathway, nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase converts nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate into NMN, after which NMN adenylyltransferase attaches an adenylate group to produce NAD+. Because NAD+ participates in redox reactions and signaling, NMN occupies a central position in cellular metabolism. The molecule is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, though the two are related in NAD+ precursor research.
NAD+ serves as a coenzyme in redox reactions and as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling. In the salvage pathway, nicotinamide is converted to NMN by the enzyme NAMPT. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by NMNAT enzymes. A separate route links nicotinamide riboside to NMN through phosphorylation. These pathways maintain NAD+ levels, which can decline with age or metabolic stress in some tissues. The relative contribution of circulating NMN to tissue NAD+ remains an active area of study.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
The unidirectionality of the system is a result from both the asymmetric skew of the helicene moiety as well as the strain of the cyclic urethane which is formed in c. This strain can be only be lowered by the clockwise rotation of the triptycene rotor in d, as both counterclockwise rotation as well as the inverse process of d are energetically unfavorable. In this respect the preference for the rotation direction is determined by both the positions of the functional groups and the shape of the helicene and is thus built into the design of the molecule instead of dictated by external factors.
== Preparation of azide == The aforementioned conversion to acyl azide has been carried out multifariously; Bergmann utilized methyl ester and hydrazide, whereas more recent attempts have designed methods such as: nitrosylation of N-formylaminoacyl hydrazide and subsequent substitution by sodium azide, reaction of a carboxylic acid with diphenyl phosphorazidate, triethylamine, and a hydroxyl component, and reaction between TMS azide and the anhydride of an amino acid.
The vagina is attached to the pelvic walls by endopelvic fascia. The peritoneum is the external layer of skin that covers the fascia. This tissue provides additional support to the pelvic floor. The endopelvic fascia is one continuous sheet of tissue and varies in thickness. It permits some shifting of the pelvic structures. The fascia contains elastic collagen fibers in a 'mesh-like' structure. The fascia also contains fibroblasts, smooth muscle, and vascular vessels. The cardinal ligament supports the apex of the vagina and derives some of its strength from vascular tissue. The endopelvic fascia attaches to the lateral pelvic wall via the arcus tendineus.

A drinking water sample from a well near the site had levels of contamination 500 times higher than the maximum limits recommended by the World Health Organization. In 2009, the Centre for Science and Environment, a Delhi-based pollution monitoring lab, released test results showing pesticide groundwater contamination up to three kilometres from the factory. Also in 2009, the BBC took a water sample from a frequently used hand pump, located just north of the plant. The sample, tested in UK, was found to contain 1,000 times the World Health Organization's recommended maximum amount of carbon tetrachloride, which causes liver and kidney damage, and is "possibly carcinogenic to humans". In 2010, a British photojournalist ventured into the abandoned UCIL factory to investigate allegations of abandoned, leaking toxins. He was hospitalized in Bhopal for a week after he was exposed to chemicals. Doctors at the Sambhavna Clinic treated him with oxygen, painkillers and anti-inflammatories following a severe respiratory reaction to toxic dust inside the factory. In October 2011, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment published an article and video by two British environmental scientists, showing the current state of the plant, landfill and solar evaporation ponds and calling for renewed international efforts to provide the necessary skills to clean up the site and contaminated groundwater. On December 3, 2024, the 40th anniversary of the incident, Madhya Pradesh High Court ruled that the site must be cleaned up in the next month.
The polypeptide substrate binds to the surface of the serine protease enzyme such that the scissile bond is inserted into the active site of the enzyme, with the carbonyl carbon of this bond positioned near the nucleophilic serine. The serine -OH attacks the carbonyl carbon, and the nitrogen of the histidine accepts the hydrogen from the -OH of the [serine] and a pair of electrons from the double bond of the carbonyl oxygen moves to the oxygen. As a result, a tetrahedral intermediate is generated. The bond joining the nitrogen and the carbon in the peptide bond is now broken. The covalent electrons creating this bond move to attack the hydrogen of the histidine, breaking the connection. The electrons that previously moved from the carbonyl oxygen double bond move back from the negative oxygen to recreate the bond, generating an acyl-enzyme intermediate. Now, water comes into the reaction. Water replaces the N-terminus of the cleaved peptide, and attacks the carbonyl carbon. Once again, the electrons from the double bond move to the oxygen making it negative, as the bond between the oxygen of the water and the carbon is formed. This is coordinated by the nitrogen of the histidine, which accepts a proton from the water. Overall, this generates another tetrahedral intermediate. In a final reaction, the bond formed in the first step between the serine and the carbonyl carbon moves to attack the hydrogen that the histidine just acquired. The now electron-deficient carbonyl carbon re-forms the double bond with the oxygen. As a result, the C-terminus of the peptide is now ejected.
Starfish have been used in reproductive and developmental studies. Female starfish produce large numbers of oocytes that are easily isolated; these can be stored in a pre-meiosis phase and stimulated to complete division by the use of 1-methyladenine. Starfish oocytes are well suited for this research as they are easy to handle, can be maintained in sea water at room temperature, are transparent, and develop quickly. Asterina pectinifera, used as a model organism for this purpose, is resilient and easy to breed and maintain in the laboratory. Another area of research is the ability of starfish to regenerate lost body parts. The stem cells of adult humans are incapable of much differentiation and understanding the regrowth, repair and cloning processes in starfish may have implications for human medicine. Starfish have an unusual ability to displace foreign objects from their bodies, which makes them difficult to tag for research tracking purposes.
==== Reservation reconstituted ==== On July 9, 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled in a 5–4 decision that the original treaties, and promise of a reservation, with the Five Civilized Tribes (specifically the Muscogee in McGirt v. Oklahoma) were never withdrawn. This decision allowed for the restoration of the reservation status of the Cherokee Nation in a later decision. The majority opinion was held by justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, and Neil Gorsuch. Hogner v. Oklahoma was decided on March 11, 2021, in Oklahoma Courts and found that the Cherokee Nation "reservation was established and had never been disestablished." Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. said: "We have long held that Cherokee Nation has a reservation, rooted in our treaties, as the Supreme Court of the United States has now affirmed" and "This proposed legislation will cement our reservation boundaries and the broad tribal jurisdiction the Supreme Court recognized in the McGirt decision. We will continue to work with the state of Oklahoma and our federal partners to ensure the safety of the public." The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians claims it has rights to the reservation as well as a "successor in interest" because they contend the original Cherokee Nation was "sunset" after "the last of its original members who signed the Dawes Roll died in 2012 at age 107." Therefore, the current Cherokee Nation is no longer the same Cherokee Nation that made the agreements with the federal government, it is only a "successor" like the UKB.
=== Weight loss and regain === As of 2007, there was no evidence showing that weight loss is directly correlated with ingesting capsaicin. Well-designed clinical research had not been performed because the pungency of capsaicin in prescribed doses under research prevented subjects from complying in the study. A 2014 meta-analysis of further trials found weak evidence that consuming capsaicin before a meal might slightly reduce the amount of food consumed, and might drive food preference toward carbohydrates.

Reslizumab, sold under the brand names Cinqair and Cinqaero, is a humanized monoclonal antibody against human interleukin-5 (IL-5). Reslizumab binds specifically to IL-5, a key cytokine responsible for the differentiation, maturation, recruitment and activation of human eosinophils. By binding to human IL-5, it blocks its biological function; consequently survival and activity of eosinophils are reduced. The benefits with reslizumab are its ability to reduce the exacerbation rate and improve lung function and asthma-related quality of life in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (with blood eosinophil count ≥ 400 cells/μL) and with at least one previous asthma exacerbation in the preceding year. The most common side effects are increased blood creatine phosphokinase, myalgia and anaphylactic reactions. In March 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved reslizumab (Cinqair) for use with other asthma medicines for the maintenance treatment of severe asthma in people aged 18 years and older. It is approved for people who have a history of severe asthma attacks (exacerbations) despite receiving their current asthma medicines. In June 2016, the European Medicines Agency recommended the granting of a marketing authorisation for reslizumab (Cinqaero) intended as add-on treatment in adults with severe eosinophilic asthma. Reslizumab is supplied as a refrigerated, sterile, single-use, preservative-free solution for intravenous infusion. The reslizumab solution is a slightly hazy/opalescent, slightly yellow liquid and is supplied as 100 mg in a 10 mL glass vial.

=== Laboratory methods === In general, on the typical laboratory scale, the direct reaction of a haloalkane with sodium hydrosulfide is inefficient owing to the competing formation of sulfides (overalkylation). Instead, alkyl halides are converted to thiols via an S-alkylation of thiourea. This multistep, one-pot process proceeds via the intermediacy of the isothiouronium salt, which is hydrolyzed in a separate step:
Legumin is a conjugated protein with six subunits. The individual subunits have a hydrophilic α chain that is initially linked to the smaller hydrophobic β chain with a peptide bond. Both the α and β chains are encoded by the same gene. Each of the six subunits has a mass of ~50-60 kDa. During translation of the α and β chains, the polypeptide is inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) where the signal peptide that initiated the cell to translocate the chains is cleaved. A disulfide bridge is formed between the α and β chains to form prolegumin, a protein precursor. Three of these subunits come together to form a trimer in the ER. The trimer of prolegumins can be transported to the vacuole for further post-translational modification. In the vacuole, the peptide bond formed between the α and β chains is cleaved now that the disulfide bridge holds the two chains together. The cleavage of the α and β chains within the trimers signals protein maturation where two trimers to come together and form the final hexameric legumin protein.
