NMN occurs in many living systems, including bacteria, yeast, plants, and mammals. Dietary sources are present in foods such as edamame, avocado, broccoli, and various meats, but amounts vary widely and are generally lower than those used in research settings. Laboratory production often relies on enzymatic synthesis or chemical phosphorylation of nicotinamide riboside, and commercial material is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder. Because NMN is hygroscopic and sensitive to heat, moisture, and pH extremes, its handling requires care to preserve identity and purity. Aqueous preparation should be done with attention to pH and temperature to limit hydrolysis.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in cells. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring linked to ribose phosphate, and the compound serves as an intermediate in the salvage pathway for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. In this pathway, nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase converts nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate into NMN, after which NMN adenylyltransferase attaches an adenylate group to produce NAD+. Because NAD+ participates in redox reactions and signaling, NMN occupies a central position in cellular metabolism. The molecule is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, though the two are related in NAD+ precursor research.
Beyond its intracellular synthesis, NMN can be taken up from the extracellular environment, although the routes are still debated. Some evidence points to direct transport into cells through specific transporters, while other work suggests dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by cellular uptake. Once inside, NMN can be converted to NAD+ by NMN adenylyltransferases; the relative contribution of these routes may differ by tissue, species, and experimental conditions. Researchers continue to investigate which mechanisms dominate in intact organisms and how they affect measured NAD+ levels. Direct measurement in tissues remains technically challenging because NMN can be rapidly metabolized during sample collection.
Analytical identification of NMN commonly uses high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; HPLC can estimate purity by peak area, while mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and fragmentation. NMR provides structural confirmation. Because NMN is charged, ion-pairing reagents or hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography columns can improve retention and peak shape. In biological samples, LC-MS/MS with stable isotope internal standards is often used to quantify NMN and related NAD+ metabolites. Method validation is important because matrix effects and rapid enzymatic interconversion can complicate measurements.
Quality control for NMN typically checks identity, assay purity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits, depending on the intended use and market. A certificate of analysis may report appearance, solubility, water content, and storage recommendations. Independent verification can compare chromatographic retention time and mass spectrum against a certified reference standard. Regulatory expectations differ between research chemicals, dietary ingredients, and pharmaceutical products. Impurity profiles and stability data are often requested for product approval, and open questions remain about how best to standardize NMN measurements across laboratories.
NMN is a polar, water-soluble nucleotide. In solid form it is usually a white to off-white powder. The compound is sensitive to heat, light, moisture, and extremes of pH, and aqueous solutions tend to degrade faster than dry material. Recommended storage for research samples is typically -20 °C or below in a sealed, desiccated container protected from light. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided, and these handling practices help maintain identity and purity during laboratory use.

Research on NMN has focused on aging, metabolic regulation, exercise capacity, and insulin sensitivity, but findings are preliminary. Many human trials are small, short in duration, and use different endpoints, which complicates comparison across studies. No national regulator has approved NMN as a therapeutic drug for any indication. In some countries it is sold as a supplement or research chemical, while other jurisdictions have questioned its status under food or supplement laws. Claims about extending human lifespan or reversing aging are not supported by established clinical evidence.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms, including bacteria, plants, and mammals. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring attached to a ribose-phosphate group. NMN functions as an intermediate in the NAD+ salvage pathway, a recycling route that regenerates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+.
Analytical measurement of NMN typically uses high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, often at a wavelength near 260 nanometers. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry provides greater sensitivity and specificity, especially for biological samples. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can confirm structure and detect certain impurities. Purity values reported by suppliers depend on the analytical method, calibration standards, and whether related compounds such as nicotinamide or NAD+ are included in the calculation. Independent verification is useful because supplement labels may not fully describe the tested material.
Regulatory treatment of NMN differs by country and has changed over time. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has stated that NMN is excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement because it was investigated as a drug before being marketed as a supplement; enforcement and legal interpretation continue to evolve. In the European Union, NMN may require authorization as a novel food before sale. In Japan, NMN has been marketed in some food products, while it is not approved as a therapeutic drug in major markets. These categories affect labeling, permitted claims, and quality oversight.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.
Identity and purity of NMN are commonly assessed by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection or mass spectrometry. High-performance liquid chromatography can separate related impurities such as nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and NAD+ depending on the method. Mass spectrometry provides molecular mass confirmation, while nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy helps establish structure and anomeric form. Quantitative assays often use calibration curves and, in biological samples, stable isotope-labeled internal standards. Method validation addresses specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and limits of detection.
Quality control for NMN materials typically includes appearance, assay, impurity profile, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits. A certificate of analysis summarizes specified tests, but the underlying methods and laboratory accreditation matter. Regulatory treatment varies by country; NMN is sold as a dietary supplement in some markets, while other jurisdictions restrict its use in foods or classify it differently. Independent verification can reduce risks of mislabeling or substitution. Questions remain about how product purity, storage history, and formulation affect delivered dose in humans.
== Function == The basic function, as already mentioned (see: Translocase § Definition), is to "catalyse the movement of ions or molecules across membranes or their separation within membranes". This form of membrane transport is classified under active membrane transport, an energy-requiring process of pumping molecules and ions across membranes against a concentration gradient. Translocases biological importance relies primarily on their critical function, in the way that they provide movement across the cell's membrane in many cellular processes that are substantial, such as:
=== Punic Wars === Between 264 and 251 BCE the First Punic War was fought in Sicily, between Rome and Carthage, which ended with the creation of the Roman province of Sicily. Following the Carthaginian provocation with the siege of Saguntum, Spain, the Second Punic War broke out in 217 BCE. The Carthaginian general Hannibal, after taking Saguntum and Marseille, crossed the Alps and defeated the Romans at the Trebbia River, the Ticino River, Lake Trasimeno, and in 216 BCE at Cannae, in Apulia. After the victory at Cannae, Hannibal achieved his first important political-strategic result. He made a brief raid on the Roman Ager before retiring to Capua. Hannibal sent his brother Mago with part of his forces into Bruttium to accommodate the surrender of cities that abandoned the Romans and to force out the rest. The people of Petelia, who remained loyal to the Romans, were attacked by the occupying Carthaginians and by the Bruttians who had allied with Hannibal. After an 11-month siege. Because the Romans were unable to help them, with Roman consent, they surrendered. Hannibal led his army to Cosenza, which, after a less harsh defense, fell to the Carthaginians. An army of Bruttians besieged and occupied another Greek city, Croton, except for the fortress, which was inhabited by less than 2,000 people. The Locrians passed to the Bruttians and the Carthaginians. Only the Regginians preserved their loyalty to Rome and their independence.
=== General xenarthran research === McDonald et al. (2026) study the composition of the xenarthran assemblage from the Sistema Calera Cave (Mexico), reporting evidence of presence of Glyptotherium cylindricum and three sloth taxa, and report that the studied site represents the second known locality preserving fossil material of both Eremotherium and Nothrotheriops.
== Alternatives == In 2018 road transport used 49% of petroleum, aviation 8%, and uses other than energy 17%. Electric vehicles are the main alternative for road transport and biojet for aviation. Single-use plastics have a high carbon footprint and may pollute the sea, but as of 2022 the best alternatives are unclear.

A number of AlphaFold clones have also been published, mostly with permissive license terms. Clones for AlphaFold3 include ByteDance's Protenix (Apache 2.0 License), AlQuraishi Laboratory's OpenFold-3 (MIT license), and Boltz-1/2 (MIT license). There are also clones for older versions, though they became less relevant with the open-source release of AlphaFold 1 and 2 source codes. Still relevant are models, both open- and closed-source, that include modifications to the AlphaFold architecture. For AlphaFold 2, a notable example is ESMFold from Meta, which replaces the multiple sequence alignment with the latent space of a protein language model. Open-source tools that complement AlphaFold have also been made. One well-cited example is ColabFold, which uses MMseqs2 instead of HHblits to speed up the sequence search, allowing the AlphaFold pipelines to run quickly on Google Colab.
In another 2018 experiment, it was possible to perform a first laser-spectroscopic characterization of the nuclear properties of 229mTh. In this experiment, laser spectroscopy of the 229Th atomic shell was conducted using a 229Th2+ ion cloud with 2% of the ions in the nuclear excited state. This allowed probing for the hyperfine shift induced by the different nuclear spin states of the ground and the isomeric state. In this way, a first experimental value for the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole moment of 229mTh could be inferred. In 2019, the isomer's excitation energy was constrained to 8.28±0.17 eV based on the direct detection of internal conversion electrons and a secure population of 229mTh from the nuclear ground state was achieved by excitation of the 29 keV nuclear excited state via synchrotron radiation. Additional measurements by a different group in 2020 produced a figure of 8.10±0.17 eV (153.1±3.2 nm wavelength). Combining these measurements, the expected transition energy is 8.12±0.11 eV. In September 2022, spectroscopy on decaying samples determined the excitation energy to be 8.338±0.024 eV. In April 2024, two separate groups finally reported precision laser excitation Th4+ cations doped into ionic crystals (of CaF2 and LiSrAlF6 with additional interstitial F− anions for charge compensation), giving a precise (~1 part per million) measurement of the transition energy.
=== Energy expenditure === Adrenergic agonists that work on the beta-2 adrenergic receptor increase energy expenditure. Although some such as clenbuterol are used without medical approval for weight loss, none have achieved approval for this indication due to cardiac risks. The anti-obesity effects of amphetamines, besides acting on the brain to reduce energy intake, are also mediated by the beta-2 adrenergic receptor. Ephedrine (and related compounds that are also active ingredients in ephedra preparations) exert their effects by acting directly and indirectly as adrenergic agonists. The discontinued drug 2,4-dinitrophenol works by increasing energy expenditure by decreasing the efficiency of mitochondria (uncoupling agent). A prodrug of DNP, HU6, has been tested in clinical trials for weight loss and fatty liver disease. Fibroblast growth factor-21 receptor agonists and drugs increasing FGF-21 activity are being investigated for obesity-related diseases; they can increase energy expenditure and several have been tested in humans. Thyroid hormones, another early weight loss drug, also raised energy expenditure but ceased to be used for weight loss due to cardiac risks and other adverse effects. Selective thyromimetics that work on the thyroid hormone receptor beta may be able to exert some of the beneficial thermogenic effects of thyroid hormones with fewer adverse effects, but none have received approval as of 2023.

These molecules tend to be used as markers and signals, as well as having some other uses. When larger groups are joined, this is called a polysaccharide. They can be joined in one long linear chain, or they may be branched. Two of the most common polysaccharides are cellulose and glycogen, both consisting of repeating glucose monomers. Cellulose is an important structural component of plant's cell walls and glycogen is used as a form of energy storage in animals. The energy storage polysaccharide in plants is called starch. Sugar can be characterized by having reducing or non-reducing ends. A reducing end of a carbohydrate is a carbon atom that can be in equilibrium with the open-chain aldehyde (aldose) or keto form (ketose). If the joining of monomers takes place at such a carbon atom, the free hydroxy group of the pyranose or furanose form is exchanged with an OH-side-chain of another sugar, yielding a full acetal. This prevents opening of the chain to the aldehyde or keto form and renders the modified residue non-reducing. Lactose contains a reducing end at its glucose moiety, whereas the galactose moiety forms a full acetal with the C4-OH group of glucose. Saccharose does not have a reducing end because of full acetal formation between the aldehyde carbon of glucose (C1) and the keto carbon of fructose (C2).
Temgicoluril (INNTooltip International Nonproprietary Name), also known as tetramethylglycoluril and sold under the brand names Adaptol and Mebicar, is an anxiolytic medication produced by Latvian pharmaceutical company Olainfarm and sold in Latvia and Russia. The chemical structure of temgicoluril is somewhat similar to uric acid and it doesn't interact with acids, alkali, oxidants and reducing agents. It seems to affect all major neurotransmitter systems. Temgicoluril has an effect on the structure of limbic–reticular activity, particularly on hypothalamus emotional zone, as well as on all several basic neuromediator systems – γ aminobutyric acid (GABA), choline, serotonin, and adrenergic activity. It decreases brain norepinephrine levels and increases brain serotonin levels without modulating dopaminergic systems or cholinergic systems. Temgicoluril purportedly has anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) properties. It is also used to aid smoking cessation. In addition, temgicoluril may be useful in the treatment of ADHD symptoms. In contrast with typical anxiolytic medications such as benzodiazepines, temgicoluril is non-habit forming, non-sedating, and does not impair motor function. It can be prepared by condensation of 1,3-dimethylurea with glyoxal. One publication described such a procedure. They combined dimethylurea and glyoxal with a catalytic amount of phosphoric acid anhydride in an aqueous solution at room temperature and after sufficient time temgicoluril was conveniently isolated by filtration.

The constituency office of Labour MP for Washington and Gateshead South Sharon Hodgson is destroyed in an arson attack. A man was arrested. Lucy Powell and Bridget Phillipson both receive enough nominations to contest the Labour Party deputy leadership election, while Bell Riberio-Addy pulls out of the contest after failing to secure enough support. Earlier in the day, Emily Thornberry and Paula Barker withdrew from the race. Sean Morgan, the leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, resigns from Welsh Labour and joins Plaid Cymru, meaning he also relinquishes his post as council leader.
== Other animals == Ileus can occur in other mammals. Ileus is a cause of colic in horses due to functional obstruction of the intestines. It is most commonly seen in horses postoperatively, especially following colic surgery. Horses experiencing ileus are at risk for gastric rupture due to rapid reflux build-up, and require intense medical management with frequent nasogastric intubation. Ileus may increase adhesion formation, because intestinal segments have more prolonged contact and intestinal distention causes serosal injury and ischemia. It is usually treated with aggressive fluid support, prokinetics, and anti-inflammatories. Ileus can also be seen in cats.

NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, a nucleotide intermediate in NAD+ biosynthesis. It consists of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate groups.
No. NMN is a precursor, while NAD+ is the dinucleotide product formed after an adenylate group is added. They are distinct molecules with different cellular roles.
Small amounts of NMN have been reported in several foods, including some vegetables and meats. The concentrations are variable and usually much lower than those used in laboratory research.
Solid NMN is generally stored in a sealed container at -20 °C or below, protected from light and moisture. Some suppliers recommend a desiccant and inert gas. Aqueous solutions are less stable and are often prepared fresh.
